Simon Willison has a rule and belief I think I want to adopt:

“I believe that the price you have to pay for taking on a project is writing about it afterwards.

I LOVE THIS!

Another way he puts it:

“I recommend adding ‘write about it’ to your definition of ‘done’ for anything that you build or create.”

I want to work towards adopting this practice, at least for my personal projects; perhaps for the work projects I’m involved in which I am able to publicize, as well!

A project isn’t finished until you’ve written about it.

This is one of the reasons I wrote my most recent post, making the files available for our CNC’d Emergency Dry-Composting toilets.

I haven’t done anything with that project in almost 2 years, but I’ve been meaning to write about it since way back then.

I’ve also been wanting that whole time to publish the blueprints under a Creative Commons license so others could use it too if they wanted/needed.

Part of me saw the project as “done” because I wasn’t actively distributing toilets to earthquake victims anymore. But, with “A project isn’t finished until you’ve written about it.”, I don’t actually allow myself to check that project off as “Done ✅”, until I’ve written and posted about it.

So, now, I have!

When I consider applying this rule, I can think of about a dozen other projects that I’ve done that I should consider writing about.

So, there might be more posts incoming. 🙃
